Acer Aspire Timeline 1810TZ Unboxing

Didn’t really intend to do a proper ‘unboxing’ type video, but I thought since this thing is pretty new and that I had the camera on me I’d shoot some video of the initial unboxing and setup. This is one of the new wave of ‘ultra mobile’ notebooks, one step up from a netbook. It features an 11.6″ screen, Intel Pentium Dual Core SU4100 processor (1.3GHz, 2MB L2 cache, 800MHz FSB), 3GB DDR2 memory, 250GB 5400rpm SATA-II hard disk, and uses the Intel GM4500MHD integrated graphics. Initial impressions are pretty good. The screen is a bit low contrast, but to be expected on a device of this price. The battery life seems to be pretty epic – 8 hours shouldn’t be impossible with average usage. Wireless reception is very good. The device is very quiet, and remains pretty cool to the touch during use. Good keyboard making use of the full width of the device. HDMI port for hooking up to a TV. Only thing I’m really missing is built in bluetooth, but that’s easily solved with a tiny USB dongle. Windows 7 Home Premium runs very quickly on this unit – boot time is good and responsiveness is excellent. Feels a fair bit more responsive than my Dell Latitude XT, a device costing far more! This was shot indoors hence the nasty 50Hz light flicker – nothing I could do about that unfortunately :-(

You guys have probably already seen the massive flood of ultrabooks on the market. I actually unboxed one of them earlier (from Acer), and was not really impressed with the build quality and the performance. Decided to give them another chance and it led me to the HP Folio. Right out of the box this thing felt more durable and better built than the Acer model. I absolutely love the chicklet keyboard but I could do without the gloss inlays between and the super mirror line finish to the screen. One interesting thing to note about the HP Folio is the bottom part of the laptop has a matte finish, freaking genius. Now the bottom portion does not attract wear, scratches, and fingerprints as other aluminum or gloss finished ones. This particular HP Folio was sporting a Core i5 processor, with 4GB RAM and a 128 GB SSD. So far startup AND applications run speedy.
