Well, it depends on the purpose you are planning to use it for.
In general, I would recommend a popular brand like IBM/Lenovo ThinkPad, Dell or Apple.
In these cases you are on the good side on issues like reliability, quality and maybe rest warranty, since those vendors have good service, at least here in Europe. Another point is that these machines do not drop that much in price the moment you purchase them, meaning you could resell it and still be able to buy something else with the money
