This review is from: Acer Aspire 7540G 15.6 inch HD Notebook (AMD Athlon II X2 M320, 4GB RAM, 250GB HDD, Blu-ray, Webcam, Wireless, Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit) (Electronics)

Firstly, the current title for this product is wrong, it has a 17.3 inch display, not a 15.6 inch display. Also, case colour is mostly black and dark grey, and the top of the lid is a dark glossy midnight blue.

I’ve tested out this laptop by installing and using Adobe Lightroom 3.3, which is quite demanding 64-bit software, and makes use of the dual processor cores. I can edit multiple photos (big 18 mega-pixel RAW files) without too much lagging. It is possible to edit a photo whilst Lightroom is processing/exporting my previously edited photo, with little hindrance.

I’ve also installed and played a DirectX 10 game, without issues. The ATI graphics should be good enough to play most games, with lower visual quality. It’s no gaming power house, but at least you can play.

I’ve connected my 24 inch desktop LCD panel, as an extended Windows 7 desktop, and have both displays running at the same time.

The LCD is not the best I’ve seen, and not the worst either. I found that the screen needed some calibration, it was very blue looking at first. Even after calibration it still has a cool temperature hue, and colour reproduction is not so accurate. I installed the latest ATI Catalyst drivers, which I find have better controls for screen adjustments. But, the screen is good and sharp.

I’ve played a Blu-ray movie, and it looked just fine on the built in display. The two built-in speakers are nothing spectacular, but are good enough for listening at low volume.

It does not have built-in Bluetooth.

This laptop is definitely good value for money, and packs a good punch, in terms of processing power.

    Pros:

Adequate processing power and memory, for most purposes.
ATI graphics with dedicated memory – will run games.
    Blu-ray movie playback.
    Good sized keyboard.

    Cons:

LCD colour reproduction is not so accurate.
